Saguenay's Cultural Activities
Festival des Musiques de CreationThis musical festival is held in Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean. This Event allows 50 different artists from around the world to perform there original experimental music to live audiences. Festival de Création des Musique has been running since 1989 and is still going strong.

grand prix Cycliste de SaguenayIn this annual event, teams of professional cyclists from Quebec, North America and South America will bike across Saguenay going through 3 of Saguenay's most popular places: La Baie, Kenogami and Chicoutimi. Cyclists race towards the finish line to win their grand prize.

Festival Sainte-Honroe dans l'ventThe Sainte-Honroe kite festival is held at the Chicoutimi airport where all types of people (adults, kids families) can gather to fly and model different kites. This festival brings together a community to celebrate the wonderful world of kites.

The main industries in Saguenay are Primary, Secondary and Tertiary with Tertiary being the largest.
Primary
The Primary sector takes up 4.5% of the economy in Saguenay and is mainly made up of three areas: Agriculture, Fishing/Hunting and Forestry/Lumber. This area of industry is slowly decreasing and is not sustainable due to products lack of need. Agriculture- Saguenay is big with agriculture and is mainly known for producing blueberries. Saguenay produces 23 million kilos of blueberries each summer and they even have an annual blueberry festival. Saguenay also produces other berries and potatoes and have been dairy and grain farming. 1.7% of the primary industry has went into agriculture. Forestry/Lumber- 88% of Saguenay is forest land, so lumber has been a major producer for the primary industry. This industry is slowly decreasing because Saguenay does not have access to all trees because most trees are publicly owned and they may be contradicting the conditions of downstream industries. Fishing/Hunting- Saguenay is home to The Saguenay river and the Saguenay Fjord- two both very large bodies of water, not including the many other nearby rivers and streams. These bodies of water were perfect to start industry with and has been homes to many fisheries and businesses over the years. |
Secondary
The Secondary sector takes up 20.1% of Saguenay's economy. This part of the industry includes Aluminum smelting, Energy. This area of industry is also decreasing. Aluminum- There are Four aluminum smelters in Saguenay and they yearly produce almost 1 million metric tons of aluminum. This industry is suffering from global over supply which results in lower prices for aluminum. This is the cause of this industry's decrease. Energy- As you already know, Saguenay is home to many bodies of water which is perfect for creating hydro electricity and Saguenay is known for their high labor force in hydro power. Also, Saguenay has three energy excellence centers to monitor the energy performance. |
Tertiary
The Tertiary sector is the largest industry in Saguenay taking up 75.3% of Saguenay's economy. In this area of industry their is a high amount of tourism, consumer services, public and para public services. This area of industry is growing rapidly. Tourism-Tourism has been a growing industry for a few years now and has employed over 92,300 people. With many great sites to see including the Saguenay Fjord (one of the most visited places in Quebec) and the many different museums, this industry will keep on growing. Services- These services involve information, culture and recreation, accommodation, food services, and other businesses. |
